This website centers around the ancient Chinese philosophical concept of 道 (”Dao”). Dao is the nature/law/force/essence that drives all things in the universe, be they metaphysical or physical, tangible or intangible. The name “Dao” was coined by the philosopher 老子 (”Lao-Zi,” transliterated spellings vary), but you can call the concept whatever you want. Feel free to stop and think of all the funny things you could call it. I’ll wait.

The purest form of Daoism is not a discrete philosophy, separate from all other studies — rather, it immerses itself ubiquitously to become “one” with all other studies. After all, Dao itself is by definition the fundamental building “block” of everything in the universe.

Infinite Zero is my place to grow as a philosopher, a writer, and ultimately a person, slash, spiritual being. Here, I try (and sometimes fail) to show how Dao relates to everything in life, simply because everything inescapably has its roots in a fundamental nature, a fundamental Dao.

When I’m not doing that, I babble on about my experiences in life and consider all the funny idiosyncrasies between what I do and what I think. It’s an effort in self improvement. I claim that most people are like me anyway, so there’s nothing to be ashamed of, but that’s probably just some kind of trick my mind plays to keep me sane.

And when I’m not doing that, I might post some scientific or artistic marvels, or just share what I find interesting.

Your part

This website can’t function as a monologue. Well, maybe it can, but I don’t want it to. Don’t be shy! Give me some feedback on the blog. Share your thoughts on the forums. Or flip flop those two combinations if you so desperately desire. I have learned a tremendous deal from other people’s insights, and I can only hope that continues. The more I learn from you, the closer I am to becoming a wise old man. So teach me what you know - please! I want to become a wise old man. Phillip Tseng, W.O.M. I could be the next Dr. Phil, except people would address me as “waum” rather than “dok-tur.” I’d like that.

About me

I have been a lifelong Daoist and vegetarian, and I’m writing from North Carolina. I am a senior at Duke University, majoring in chemistry and concentrating in pharmacology. In purely philosophical terms, I am likely best described as a pantheist. Yes, I’m Asian. No, I was not an immigrant.

Infinite Zero: the name

The name “Infinite Zero” (abbreviated i0) was intentionally selected for its oxymoronic factor. The idea stems from Daoism, which theorizes that the seed to everything in the universe, both physical and metaphysical, is the void, the nothingness, the “Zero.” But because this void is the seed to everything, it has infinite power. Thus the name, “Infinite Zero.”
